Mare Management

Mare management is of the utmost importance to the entire staff at Hartman Equine Reproduction Center. Proper mare management is the cornerstone to ensuring successful first cycle pregnancy rates for mares that are donating embryos or carrying their own pregnancy. Mares are stalled in our large well ventilated mare motel and year round residents are placed under artificial lighting in November. High quality feed and hay as well as proper de-worming, trimming and vaccination schedules are provided to our client’s mares. Mares are monitored closely and are ultrasounded daily while in estrus. Management strategies are chosen on an individual basis. This may include:
Uterine culture and sensitivity: rapid results are available as HERC has an onsite Microbiology lab
Uterine Lavage
Uterine Infusion
Ecbolics (agents to aid in uterine clearance)
Serum Progesterone: rapid results are available as HERC has an onsite progesterone analyzer
Management of mares with disabilities: HERC can manage broodmares with orthopedic issues, such as laminitis (founder), that require extra care and attention
Foaling: HERC has a 24 hour staff that is trained in proper foaling protocols and veterinarians are on call and available 24 hours a day to provide post-natal care to foals when needed
Problem or Geriatric Mare Management: Dr. Hartman has vast experience and success in managing sub-fertile mares for embryo transfer
